What is the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) is the world's first comprehensive law on artificial intelligence. It classifies AI systems by risk level and imposes obligations for transparency, documentation, and human oversight. It applies directly in all EU member states, including Bulgaria.
When does it take effect?
The AI Act is applied in phases: the AI literacy obligation (Art. 4) has been in effect since February 2, 2025. The rules for high-risk AI systems and transparency take effect on August 2, 2026 - less than 5 months remain.
Does it affect my business?
If you use ChatGPT, AI chatbots, AI for content generation, or any AI system in your business - yes, the AI Act affects you. Even minimal usage requires ensuring AI literacy among your staff.

For SMEs, fines are the lower of: 3% of annual turnover or €15 million for transparency violations; 7% or €35 million for prohibited practices. Important: for SMEs, the lower amount always applies.
